NSAI and DCU Academic Standards Day 2026

On 15 October 2026, the day following World Standards Day, NSAI and Dublin City University co-organised an EDU4Standards Academic Standards Day for 183 fourth-year nursing students at the DCU School of Nursing. The event focused on the critical role of standards in healthcare and demonstrated how standardisation supports patient safety, quality of care, innovation, trust, consistency and excellence across health services. The Academic Standards Day formed part of the wider European EDU4Standards initiative, which aims to strengthen awareness and understanding of standardisation among students and future professionals.

Programme and Outcomes

The programme opened with a general session on standardisation, followed by presentations showcasing research from PhD candidates and postdoctoral researchers whose work engages with standards. Participants also heard from experts involved in the development of health informatics standards and representatives of the HSE who shared their experience of implementing standards in healthcare practice. The event concluded with an interactive panel discussion and question-and-answer session, providing students with the opportunity to engage directly with speakers and explore the practical implications of standards in healthcare.

The speakers and sessions delivered the key learning outcomes of the EDU4Standards programme by raising students’ awareness of the standardisation landscape and the organisations involved in developing and implementing standards. Through presentations from researchers, standards developers and healthcare practitioners, students gained insight into the skills required to engage with and contribute to standardisation activities. Discussions highlighted both the technical and societal dimensions of standards, demonstrating how they support safe, effective and interoperable healthcare services. The programme also illustrated the strategic role standards play in achieving broader European policy objectives, particularly in areas such as digital health, innovation and quality assurance. Finally, by demonstrating how standards translate research, innovation and professional expertise into practical healthcare applications, the event increased awareness of standardisation as an important route for knowledge valorisation and economic development.

Academic Standards Day successfully introduced students to the importance of standards in healthcare and society and confirms the importance of continuing initiatives, such as this one, to build standards literacy among the next generation of healthcare professionals.
