What is Safety Schemes in Procurement (SSIP)?

Safety Schemes in Procurement is the mutual recognition scheme for health and safety standards in the construction industry.
A major problem for contractors is the need to be assessed by multiple health and safety schemes.  By becoming health and safety assessed with an SSIP scheme, you have satisfied the criteria for all other SSIP members’ schemes, with the impact of not having to pay multiple assessment fees.  SSIP facilitates mutual recognition between health and safety pre-qualification schemes saving time and money.

The key facts about SSIP:

  • SSIP is not an assessment scheme; it is a membership or umbrella body for assessment schemes with the common aim of reducing both duplication and costs for the buyer and supplier.
  • Suppliers do not join or become members of SSIP.  It is the assessment schemes who are registered members.
  • If you have an ISO 45001:2018 Occupational Health and Safety Management System accredited certificate from NSAI, and you work in the construction sector in Northern Ireland or the UK, you can request to have your company details on the SSIP website.

Reducing Duplication in Construction Health and Safety

SSIP has over thirty members comprising of  Assessment Schemes and Accredited Bodies who offer ISO 45001:2018 certification in construction.  In Ireland NSAI have INAB accreditation for ISO 45001:2018.  Together these schemes save substantial amounts of money for both the buyers and suppliers.

Benefits of SSIP

  • Reduces cost
  • Transparency amongst members
  • Eliminates the need for completion of multiple pre-qualification questionnaires
