  • Syncreon says certification to key international standards can help Irish businesses expand
  • Standards allow H&MV Engineering to tender for larger and more complex projects in Ireland and abroad
  • NSAI to host free information roadshow in Limerick this Thursday on quality management and environmental standards, ISO 9001 and ISO 14001

The use of international business standards is fast becoming a basic requirement to attract new customers, according to two Limerick-based companies, who are urging other organisations to consider getting certified ahead of Brexit.

Sycreon, an international logistics company with offices on the Dock Road, says Irish businesses should use every tool at their disposal to prepare for any uncertainty after the United Kingdom leaves the European Union. The firm added that certification to ISO 9001, which ensures more efficient management systems, has given its customers confidence that it is working to the highest international standards.

“To date the main impact of Brexit has been in relation to fluctuating exchange rates, but we are assessing the situation for any future impacts”, said Mairéad Portley, Syncreon’s Director of Standards of Compliance. “I’m sure that our international standards, including ISO 9001 and the International Health and Safety Standard, OHSAS 18001, will put us in a very competitive position.”

H&MV Engineering says the most worrying aspects of Brexit will be the impact it could have on the movement of goods and services between Ireland and the UK as well as the introduction of any potential trade tariffs, additional regulation and form filling. The Castletroy-based electrical engineering firm says international business standards are fast becoming the norm when applying for government tenders in the UK, a requirement that is likely to continue post Brexit.

“Achieving NSAI Certification for ISO 9001 in quality management systems and ISO 14001 in environmental systems has improved and ensured our safety, quality and environmental compliance on all our projects”, said Martin Whelan, Asset & Quality Manager at H&MV Engineering. “It has allowed H&MV tender for larger and more complex projects both in Ireland and abroad, as the ISO Standards are so recognised and acceptable across all countries and industries worldwide.”

Both companies were speaking ahead of a free NSAI seminar in Limerick on Thursday. The roadshow-style event is being held this Thursday (9th February) in the Radisson Blu Hotel on the Ennis Road for companies who are already certified to ISO 9001 and ISO 14001.

The aim of the seminar is to inform businesses about the latest versions of these standards, which were updated in 2015 by members of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). These experts, who hailed from over 180 countries, aimed to help organisations improve business processes, save money and deal with future environmental challenges.

Organisations who are currently ISO 9001 and ISO 14001-certified have until September 2018 to upgrade to the new versions of the standards.

NSAI will hold information events in February and March, for organisations who want to find out about the changes, and how they can benefit their company. The seminars are free, but registration is necessary.
