The National Standards Authority of Ireland is proud to announce the publication of a comprehensive revision to I.S. 361 - Code of practice for the safe use of tower cranes - Conventional and self-erecting tower cranes.

This Irish Standard specifies a code of practice for the safe use of tower cranes ─ conventional and self - erecting tower cranes. This applies to:

  • the selection of tower cranes,
  • planning the erection and alteration (including climbing),
  • maintenance,
  • operation, and
  • dismantling, including site specific design work (e.g. base and ties)

I.S. 361:2024 is the second edition of I.S. 361 which was originally published in 2013. This second edition takes into account advances in technology, changes in construction practices, and occupational health and safety legislation.

The NSAI Cranes Technical Sub-Committee, NSAI/TC 33/SC 2, who drafted this revision of I.S. 361, consists of construction industry, union and Health and Safety Authority (HSA) representatives as well as inspection, assessment and crane hire associations and private consultants.

This revised Irish Standard aligns with and should be read in conjunction with I.S.  360:2019 – Code of practice: Safe use of cranes in the construction industry – Part 1: General.
