Gas Technical Standards Committee
The Gas Technical Standards Committee's scope of work covers all aspects of the supply and usage of natural gas, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), liquefied natural gas (LNG), renewable gas (biomethane, bio LPG) and hydrogen. The membership of the committee is composed of key stakeholders/collective bodies that provide an authoritative and representative voice or policy role in the gas sector.
Gas Technical Standards Committee members contribute their knowledge and expertise on a voluntary basis and advises the NSAI on what Irish standards and Codes of Practice are necessary for products and processes used in the gas industry, with particular regard to safety. The Gas Technical Standards Committee also supports the development of European (CEN) and International (ISO) gas related standards.
The Gas Technical Standards Committee is made up of a Central Committee governing the 7 sub-committees that are listed below.

GTSC sub-committees
NSAI/ TC 1/ SC 1 Central Committee's role is to advise NSAI on technical and policy matters concerning Ireland’s membership of CEN and ISO, the formulation of Irish Standards and the establishment and maintenance of the Gas Technical Standards Committee sub-committees and working groups.
The membership of the central committee is comprised of representatives from Government Departments, Regulatory bodies, and the Chairs of each sub-committee.
WG 1 supports the coordination of Hydrogen standardisation related information to be raised at the relevant Gas Technical Standards Committee sub-committees and manages the resolution of resulting actions and gaps in standardisation.
WG 2 facilitates information sharing with a focus on industrial gas quality needs (including power generation) connected to gas infrastructure (i.e. Transmission System Operator, Distribution System Operator) and the impact on their processes if hydrogen is used for combustion in the future, as well as other technical information deemed useful for this group of experts.
WG 3 facilitates the collaboration among academic experts and allows experts to keep abreast of Hydrogen Pre-Normative Research and general standardisation updates relevant to academics involved in hydrogen research. It is envisaged that as the industry develops, there will be further webinars communicating pre-normative research required and as a result, membership for this e-committee should grow.
NSAI/ TC 1/ SC 2 supports the development of national and international standards in the areas of the distribution of natural gas, LPG, renewable gas (biomethane, bio LPG) and hydrogen up to 16 bar. This includes services, distribution, PE pipe and fittings, and regulators.
National standards developed by this committee include:
- I.S. 329, Gas distribution mains
- S.R. 12007-5, Installation of Gas Service Pipes
- I.S. 370, Colour code for buried plastics piping
- I.S. 822, Gas pressure regulating installations on service pipelines
