The Research Ireland Public Service Fellowship is an initiative which offers researchers a unique opportunity to be temporarily seconded to Government Departments and Agencies (Host Organisations) to work on specific projects where they can add value resulting in mutually beneficial outcomes.

The 2026 Call is partnering with 26 Government Departments and Agencies, with 71 projects available for application.   NSAI is pleased to be acting as a potential Host Organisation under the current call.  The three NSAI projects up for consideration are summarised below. Additional information, including full project details, is available on the Research Ireland call page - HERE

Fellowships can have a duration of between 6 and 12 months if full-time, and between 12 and 24 months if part-time. The maximum award amount is €130,000 direct costs. For further details, see call document.

  1. National Metrology Laboratory: NSAI Standards: Determination of the metrological landscape and its impact on the Irish economy

This project aims to evaluate the current state of Ireland’s metrology infrastructure, its integration across key economic sectors, and the quantifiable impact of measurement science on national productivity, innovation, and regulatory compliance. The findings will inform national policy, support investment decisions, and strengthen Ireland’s competitiveness and position in the global quality infrastructure ecosystem.

  1. National Metrology Laboratory: NSAI Standards: Development of National Critical Infrastructure for the dissemination of Irish Standard Time, UTC (NSAI) and supporting its resilience

Position, Navigation and Timing (PNT) has become of crucial significance within the transport sector. Recent signal jamming and spoofing by adversarial states have resulted in the emergency landing of aircraft in European airspace and the loss of tracking and navigation capabilities at sea.

Ireland’s current infrastructure needs significant enhancement in order to ensure resilience of PNT, and to avoid risk of failure of navigation systems, and implications for transport, emergency services, telecommunications, finance and banking.

This project aims to conduct a needs analysis and design and develop an appropriate PNT resilience plan suitable for Ireland. This would include the utilisation of the NML’s time and frequency standards as a means to disseminate accurate time in the event of a threat to PNT services.

  1. NSAI Standards: Standardisation Strategy for Researchers – Analysis and Recommendations for Enhanced Engagement

Standards help to bring emerging technology closer to market acceptance and deployment, they enable interoperability between components, products and services. Standards build trust and demonstrate quality and safety. Integration of research and innovation with standards can have a significant impact on the subsequent uptake of research outcomes by industry and can serve as an important part of research translation strategies.

In 2023, the EU published a ‘Code of Practice on Standardisation in the European Research Area’. The Code of practice is part of the EU knowledge valorisation policy, which aims to maximise social and economic value of research & innovation in Europe. The purpose of this project is to benchmark the engagement of Irish researchers with standardisation and to make evidenced-based recommendations for increasing/improving this engagement. In the context of this project, NSAI is particularly interested in Digital Standards and Emerging Technologies.
