NSAI’s Legal Metrology Service (LMS) is responsible for ensuring the accuracy of taximeters in use in Ireland, while also ensuring taximeters are of an approved type, and verified so that fares charged to passengers are correct and accurate.

On the 7th of April, the National Transport Authority (NTA) made the NSAI aware of a taximeter programming issue with Digitax taxi metering systems, that may result in overcharging passengers, in contravention of the National Maximum Taxi Fare Regulations. Approximately 7.5% of taximeters in use are impacted by this, affecting trade operations between 08:00 to 20:00, Monday – Friday.

The applicable taxi operators have been informed by the NSAI of the issue. The NTA have advised that those affected operators should cease operations immediately and operations are not to recommence until their taximeters are updated and reverified.

The NSAI will actively monitor taximeter software installation activities on a daily basis to ensure all the affected taximeters are updated.

NSAI’s priority is to ensure that taximeters used in the taxi fleet are accurate and compliant with the regulated national maximum taxi fare. NSAI is working with the software provider, installers, Applus and the NTA to implement the fix and complete re-verification as quickly as possible.

All affected taxi operators should immediately contact their installer to have their tariff program updated. Once this is updated, they should contact Applus directly via phone on 01-4135951 to book in a verification.

The verification carried out by Applus is at no cost.
