Two important Goalpost safety standards are currently undergoing revision and have been launched for public consultation by CEN (the European Committee for Standardization).
EN 748 - Playing field equipment - Football goals - Functional and safety requirements, test methods
EN 16579 - Playing field equipment - Portable and permanent socketed goals - Functional, safety requirements and test methods
These standards address the functional and safety requirements and test methods for goalposts used at all levels of Football (Soccer), Gaelic Football, Hurling, Camogie, and Rugby
Changes from the current editions will see requirements for Football (Soccer) moved from EN 16579 to EN 748.
EN 748 has been significantly updated to include all types of Football (Soccer) goalposts above 10kg. It also includes information on test methods for head, neck, and finger entrapment, goalpost foundations, goalpost selection, material selection, goalpost inspection and maintenance, and goalpost movement and storage.
Public consultation period: From 31st October 2025 until 25th December 2025, inclusive.
