Tachograph

A tachograph is a device fitted to certain categories of large vehicles that automatically records the vehicles speed and distance together with the time drivers spend driving and resting. Tachogaphs can be either analogue or digital with the latter being required on a mandatory basis since May 2006. Since the introduction of Digital tachographs smart cards are now in use by drivers, companies, workshops and enforcement officers i.e An Garda Siochana and The Road Safety Authority (RSA) transport officers. These smart cards keep a record of all relevant information to ensure that driver’s hours regulations(1) are adhered to. These smart cards are issued by the RSA.

(1)Regulation (EC) No 561/2006 of 15 March 2006 on the harmonisation of certain social legislation relating to road transport

NSAI has approved a number of authorised workshops throughout the country for the installation, calibration, testing and sealing of recording equipment. Please see most recent Statutory Instrument 229 of 2017.
