A tachograph is a device fitted to certain categories of large vehicles that automatically records the vehicles speed and distance together with the time drivers spend driving and resting. Tachogaphs can be either analogue or digital with the latter being required on a mandatory basis since May 2006. Since the introduction of Digital tachographs smart cards are now in use by drivers, companies, workshops and enforcement officers i.e An Garda Siochana and The Road Safety Authority (RSA) transport officers. These smart cards keep a record of all relevant information to ensure that driver’s hours regulations(1) are adhered to. These smart cards are issued by the RSA.
