According to European statistics for 2008 Ireland ranks 7th lowest after Netherlands, UK, Sweden, Switzerland, Norway, and Germany in terms of numbers of road fatalities per capita, with 279 fatal road accidents [source: TISPOL].  And while trends indicate that road fatality numbers are on the decline, road safety remains an important and weighty issue.
