Irish Biocontamination Mirror Open Day & Workshop
Working Group WG02 & ISO 14698
An update on the activities of Working Group WG02 in revising ISO 14698.
Jointly organised by the Irish Cleanroom Society and NSAI.
Date: Thursday, July 26th 2012 | 9am - 5pm
Location: NSAI, 4th Floor, 1 Swift Square, Northwood, Santry, Dublin 9
Watch the review by Conor Murray, Chairman ICS & Convenor Irish BMG, of the Biocontamination Mirror Group meeting held in NSAI on 26 July 2012.
This meeting was of Technical Committee 209 who are responsible for ISO 14644 and ISO 14698 standards dealing with airborne and surface contamination in cleanrooms and controlled environments.

The Irish Biocontamination Mirror Group has been set up to share information on ISO TC 209 WG02 and encourage participation in the ISO process. The Mirror will give a voice to the wide variety of interests in Ireland and help formulate an Irish response through the Irish representatives on WG02.
Technical Committee TC 209 is responsible for ISO 14644 & 14698 standards dealing with airborne and surface contamination in cleanrooms and controlled environments. ISO 14698 -1 & -2:2003 deal with airborne and surface Biocontamination.
However developments in Quality Risk Management, Risk Assessment, Critical Control Points and Rapid Microbiological Methods, coupled with the need for setting limits and providing Classification Tables has driven the need for a major revision.
Why delegates attended?
The Irish Biocontamination Mirror Group has been set up to share information on ISO TC 209 WG02 and encourage participation in the ISO process. We are delighted to have Dr Vance Bergeron and Dr Horst Weissieker with us for a focussed discussion. Watch the post workshop interviews with the speakers
This workshop benefited those involved in biocontamination control:
- Microbiologists & Science Professionals in Life Sciences, Food and Healthcare
- Microbiologists & Science professionals establishing biocontamination control programmes – Risk Assessments,
- Critical Control Points, setting Alert & Action levels
- Microbiologists & Science Professionals in Environmental Monitoring
- Engineering staff involved in Controlled Environments inc GMP Cleanrooms, Laboratories, Hospital Operating Theatres, ICUs & Food Processing areas
Meet the speakers:
Dr Vance Bergeron, CNRS Scientific Director, Subject Matter Expert, WG02 France
Dr. Bergeron is a French national member and team leader for the revision of ISO 14698. He is a CNRS Director de Recherche at the Ecole Normale Superieure de Lyon, in the Soft Condensed matter and Biological Systems department.
Dr. Bergeron’s research, over the last ten years has been focused on methods of measuring and techniques for eradicating airborne contamination levels. In particular activities include advances in the development of liquid-phase bio-collectors, non-thermal plasma decontamination devices and understanding the relationship between airborne and surface contamination levels
Dr Horst Weissieker, TUEV SUD Cleancert, Chairman of VDI 2083 (German Cleanroom Society)
Dr Weissieker is Chairman of VDI 2083 – Cleanrooms, in effect the German Cleanroom Society and a member of the German Biocontamination Mirror Group of ISO 14698. Dr Weissieker has over 25 years of experience in Life Sciences as well as contamination control in Food applications.
Dr Weissieker specialises in Life Sciences, Food & Nutrition and Hospital testing and certification. TUEV SUD Cleancert provide consulting services, independent 3rd party testing and certification and international Hospital and Laboratory accreditation.
