The Authorised Verifier Scheme was introduced in 2008 to provide a more efficient and effective way of delivering verifications to owners of measuring instruments used in trade. In essence the scheme allows the Director of Legal Metrology to appoint private enterprises to carry out national verifications on behalf of the Legal Metrology Service. (Note: EC verifications are not included in this Scheme)
The authorisation is granted to applicants that demonstrate they have the required expertise and resources to carry out verification work and the suitability of each is assessed so as to ensure they operate with:–
- Trained personnel
- Traceable testing equipment
- Test procedures according to international standards
- Records systems
- Customer charter
all of which must be documented in a quality management system certified by an accredited body or company.
The application process is launched from time to time through public tender (
www.e-tenders.gov.ie) where full details can be obtained of the requirements applicable to the scheme. Authorisations are normally issued for 4 years and each successful applicant is limited by the terms and conditions of their authorisation which contains details of the service to be provided and their obligations.
