National Small Series Type Approval
General
NSSTA is a national scheme which comes into effect on the 29th April 2009 with the introduction of the re-cast framework directive 2007/46/EC. It introduces an approval scheme for manufacturers in Ireland who produce small quantities of vehicles.
Requirements
The key advantages of this scheme are that some technical requirements may be reduced in comparison with ECWVTA. This reduces the costs associated with the approval process. The CoP requirements will be appropriate and proportionate to the scale of the operation. However, the number of vehicles that can be manufactured are limited.
Please see table below for the limits for each vehicle category:

Route to Approval
This is a multi-step process:
- Test and inspection records from an Approved Test Centre (ATC)
- Description of Conformity of Production (CoP) process
Following satisfactory review of the manufactures application package and manufacturer's quality system; approval will be granted to the vehicle type. Approval is in the form of a National Small Series Type Approval (NSSTA) certificate issued by NSAI.
Vehicle Registration
In order to generate a Certificate of Conformity (CoC) for each vehicle in the series, the manufacturer will require the NSSTA certificate. For the purposes of vehicle registration Revenue will require a CoC for each vehicle in the series.
